About Us

Azenphony Press was founded in 1987 by Ken Wachsberger to self-publish his first novel, Beercans on the Side of the Road: The Story of Henry the Hitchhiker. A country that had strayed so far to the right as to elect Ronald Reagan was not in the mood to publish a book that embraced freedom through hitchhiking and celebrated the counterculture of the sixties and seventies.

But new technology was making self-publishing feasible. Ken, a fast typist but techno-challenged, allowed himself to be pulled into the electronic age and typeset Beercans himself on WordPerfect 4.2.

Since then, Azenphony Press has published other books written and edited by Ken. Others have been published by “traditional,” corporate or academic publishing houses. All of them may be found on www.azenphonypress.com and www.voicesfromtheunderground.com.

Subject areas of Azenphony Press books include the First Amendment, the underground press of the Vietnam era, censorship, the Holocaust and Jewish resistance, the I-Search paper (a first-of-its-kind textbook), writing for self-discovery, and how to keep sane as a support person when your partner has breast cancer.

Azenphony Press is a member of BNI-Ann Arbor. Publisher Ken Wachsberger is a member of National Writers Union.
